Yellowstone Bears in the Wild
Written by noted naturalist, Dr. James C. Halfpenny.
Yellowstone Bears in the Wild is a comprehensive
portrait of grizzly bears and black bears in the
Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. It features new
scientific research including cutting-edge discoveries
about bear biology and ecology. The information is
skillfully enhanced with amazing personal stories from
bear biologists, park rangers, and bear watchers, and
from Dr. Halfpenny’s own experiences.
This hardcover edition is imprinted with the ACTUAL
LIFE-SIZED FOOTPRINTS OF GRIZZLY BEAR 264, a beloved
grizzly that was watched by thousands of ursophiles.
Front and hind tracks are on the front and back covers. Imprints were made from plaster casts taken by Lance and Belinda Peck.
Fascinating subjects include descriptions of bear
sizes, bear play, curiosity, raising cubs, wolves and
bears, predation and scavenging, denning and
hibernation, and eating moths and worms. There are
explanations of “bear art,” a bear’s “personal space,”
and bear “thinking.” The book also describes how bears
are responding to critical ecological changes taking
place in Yellowstone. Remarkable photographs by Michael
H. Francis, a renowned wildlife photographer, vividly
illustrate bear behavior and biology.

Track Plates for Mammals
A How To Manual & Aid To Footprint Identification
Written by Jim Halfpenny, Meghan Walla-Murphy, Elizabeth Rogers, and
David Tiller
Power to the Tracker! Now you can get tracks anywhere!
Track Plates are ingenious devices which allow tracker's
to obtain footprints of elusive mammals. Plates may be
used in places where natural substrates do not allow
tracking such as inside buildings or on hard ground.
Each plate has a coating which sticks to an animal's foot
until it walks across a piece of sticky paper and leaves
footprints behind. Footprints are then preserved with
clear contact paper in a "track sandwich." The sandwich
may be copied on a photocopier or digitized for
archieving. Measurements may be made on the track
sandwich.
Track plates allow you to explore the hidden world of
what lurks when you are not looking. Plates are used
by professional ecologist to find rare and endangered
species by non-invasive censusing.

BEAST IN THE GARDEN
by David BaronMountain Lions eat people, don't they?! Yes, and this is the story of Jim Halfpenny and Michael Sander's research into human/lion confrontations along the Front Range of Colorado. David wove together the complex story of the rise of the cougar population with its inevitable crash "teeth-first" into the exploding throng of people around Boulder, Colorado. At the core of the story, Jim and Michael, whose research showed the increase in human/lion encounters, cougar habituation, the struggle of agencies to manage a dangerous situation, and lions attacking people. Few understand cougars and cougar interactions as Jim and Michael do and this is their story. Please let me know to whom to autograph your book. Paperback copy.
